A Multi Disciplinary Approach To Vaastu Energy

Vastu Energy

‘Miracles do not happen in contradiction to Nature but only to that which is known to Nature.’ - Saint Augustine

Energy is defined as capacity of doing work, but we are not talking about in terms of the energy units like ‘Ergs’ and ‘Joules’ what we read in schools. We see ‘Energy’ in the flowers, when they blossoms. The seeds also sprout on their own which is due to ‘Energy’.

There are two types of Energy in Nature and they are named as ‘Positive Energy’ and ‘Negative Energy’, i.e. ‘Constructive’ or ‘Destructive’ Energy existing in Universe. This positive energy makes the seed to sprout. Starting from microbes to the elephant, they use this ‘Energy’. Similarly, the planets move on their own with some energy but it is said the energy utilized for this rotation is negligible compared to our Universal Energy available in Space.

There are some ‘Destructive Energies’ also prevailing in the Universe, which do not allow the seed to sprout and human to prosper. The worms, bacteria, virus do this destructive work. Now we are referring to some harmful energy in Vastu in form of radiations, those are emanating from Earth and from Cosmos. These energies work on the Structures (‘Matter’) and Humans or Animals (‘Bio-Energy Fields’).

Building-Biology (ENERGY)

Our building is not just a place of dwelling but it is like another layer of skin connecting us with the energies of outer world. People live in it either partially (offices & factories) or full time (homes). It provides security, protects our belongings. Further, it is in the form of a geometrical figure, similar to a ‘YANTRA’ working as a ‘PowerHouse’. It should provide good health and support in attaining prosperity. It must help us physically, mentally and spiritually. Here prosperity means, should providing sufficient financial support to sustain, making us free from external problems and guarantee peace to the dwellers.

(a) Human Life and ‘Building Biology’

It means to say that we have many objects around us, which can be compared to the ‘life’ or the living cells in our body, having an enormous impact with our body chemicals and physical aspects of matter. This cannot be seen with a naked eye but can be experienced with time like the good and bad effects of them affecting wellbeing of a human body. Similarly, a ‘building’ is not a simply a structure, but it has ‘energy’ (‘Ojass’ or ‘Prana’) must have the support of following factors like good environment; materials used in its construction like rock, wood, and covering items etc.; articles placed in it, must have mutual acceptance with the persons living in it. It is called compatibility.

(b) Geo-Biology

The existing Earth's magnetic field, gravity, sunlight are helping out biology, while the geological structures underneath the buildings, consisting of harmful mineral give harmful radiations, faults, fractures, presence of water channels, conscious bones in rocky structures which effect residents living directly above them these radiations (which breaks the chemical bondage) with their ‘Negative Aura Energy’ may clash with our energy body. It means this affects our Cell Energy. Incurable diseases like Cancer, T.B, Heart Attacks occurred due to blockages of energy in the cell and it's functions. The remains of the dead and their bones sometimes believed  by some as ‘Conscious’ may influence the human bio-energetic field, causing psychic problems. The occurrence of unpredictable uneventful deaths, murders brings total turmoil in the peace of the residents.

(c) ‘Bau-Biologie’ or Building Biology

It is a term used by German Vastu specialists to describe a movement, to promote the use of healthy building principles as a means for better living working place relating to health of the occupants. Primarily it is a study of pattern of the house, building and its contents vis-à-vis their interaction with the human energy field. It is a field of building science investigating the indoor environment for a variety of irritants. Such environment can produce negative or stressful results or positive or restful effects affecting mental and physical health of the occupants. Some un-natural structural irregularities, broken items, metallic items, electrical EMF gadgets, skin or hides or their heads used as decorative pieces may give Infra-red radiation. Their negative energies may result in unidentifiable nausea, headache and allergies etc.

Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science that ensures constructions and architectures across all directions are built as per the presiding deity of the energy of the direction, and, regularly energized to remove negative elements, obstruct negative energies and increase positive energies in one’s dwelling. Vastu Shastra or the Vastu Purusha’s every part of the body represent a different direction ruled by the presiding deity - this fundamental truth has its roots in the most ancient Vedic scriptures - the Vedas. Vastu Shastra therefore is about using the ‘Science of Architecture’, which contains a collection of rules and principles dedicated to the construction and architecture of a harmonious dwelling as found, and, complied from various Puranas and Agamas. All construction carried out in the Vedic period especially temples adhered to Vastu principles strictly which led to immense gains lifelong for the inhabitants.

  • The diagrams shown below, known as Vastu Purusha Mandala, is a metaphysical square plan that illustrates how the Vastu Purusha was pinned down by Brahma and 44 Gods - face down, with his head to the North-East and his feet towards the South-West.

  • The diagram is divided into 9 x 9 = 81 parts. The positions of the 45 gods (32 in the external enclosures and 13 in the internal enclosures) who are holding down the Vastu Purusha are shown. These symbolic Gods rule various aspects of life and have certain inherent qualities.

  • The function of the rooms placed in each area of the house was according to the nature of the deity ruling that particular area.

According to Vastu Shastra, if the house is designed as per the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a perfectly balanced environment which ensures enhanced health, wealth and happiness is created, because the ancient Vaastu pundits figured out that when the different rooms were placed according to the Vastu Mandala, good disposition to the Sun, proper ventilation and lighting and privacy would be ensured.

One should propitiate these deities and chalk out the building plan, entrances and doors according to the Vaastu Mandala.

Vastu Shastra uses shapes (mandalas), directions, and calculates various energy principles (including the energy of the presiding deity) so that the constructions of houses and buildings are in alignment with the various elements of laws of universe, to ensure both sides co-exist in harmony and benefit from each other. Vastu Shastra helps one derive maximum benefits out of various energies that reside in various directions. It helps manage the energies and influences of various directions, elements, and more through principles of design, layout, measurements, construction, and space and geometry management to maximize benefits of health, wealth, harmony, and happiness. Living in houses, flats, or using non-compliant vastu spaces affect the thought process of residents negatively that result in failures, losses, illness, mental disorders, stress in relationships, even untimely deaths (particularly women).

Vastu Purush is said to be the ruling deity of a residential structure. He is believed to lie in the dwelling with his head towards Northeast and feet towards Southwest and facing downwards.

The Matsya Purana references his story as follows. There was once a war between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasura. During this heat-filled fight, sweat drops oozed from the body of Shiva and fell onto the Earth. Out of this sweat emerged a gigantic man expanding to cover the heavenly abodes of gods and demons. The gods thought this giant demon was sent by the demons to defeat them and the demons thought this huge God was sent to defeat them. The war between the two deities ceased.

Fearful that this man will eat all three lokas; 45 Gods, Astha Dikapalakas (Lords of eight directions), and other celestial beings pinned the man to the ground head in the Northeast direction and legs in the Southwest direction. Unable to move, the man prayed to Lord Shiva and asked what his fault was? Lord Shiva realized that the cosmic being was not at fault, blessed him, and made him the Vastu Purush, the God of all constructions. He stated that he would be worshipped before and in all constructions. Vastu Purusha then stated the rules for all structures. Vastu Purush and other Deities’ the position that pinned him down on every plot or structure is known as Vastu Purusha Mandala and their principles are followed while doing all construction.

Geopathic Stress Lines

According to Vastu Shastra, the flow of energy on the earth is in the form of huge grid lines from north to south and east to west. Geopathic stress zones are formed at the meeting points of these lines. Other than at the intersection of these lines, Geopathic stress is also caused because of the electromagnetic field of the earth. Many times due to underground water streams, caves, and mineral deposits, this stress is created. Geopathic Stress Zones can have short-term as well as long-term negative impacts on health. Geopathic stress affects the ability of a person to take right and positive decisions.

If the residents of a particular dwelling experience issues such as depression, headache, trouble sleeping, lethargy, and mental stress one may be living in a zone which high geopathic stress. Other indicators include frequent breakdown of electrical equipment, uneasy or aggravated behavior in pets, cracks in construction, the area being accident-prone, and much more. In Vastu, the problem of negative energy arising from the geopathic stress zone can be solved in various ways such as - blocking or absorbing it.

Significance of Brahmasthan

Lord Brahma rules Brahmasthan. It is imperative to preserve this central area and keep it devoid of any heavy concrete structures. You may install Vastu yantras that nullify the malefic defects of Vastu in the dwelling.

Significance of Marmasthan

Marma in Sanskrit means open or exposed and the word mostly refers to points in the human body that are located at the intersections of veins, muscles, joints, bones, ligaments, or tendons. In Vastu Shastra, Marmasthan is the crossing point of longitudinal and latitudinal lines in the Vastu Purusha mandal. They are sensitive points in a house or a dwelling and certain rules are to be followed for them as per Vastu Shastra.

What is Chakra Vastu?

Chakra Vastu is a science that maps the 7 Chakras (subtle energies in the human aura) with the Vastu Shastra (or the Vastu Purush). The rules and principles of Chakra Vastu in alignment with the constructions of houses or flats ensures harmony of the residents with various elemental energies leading to health, happiness, growth, and abundance in all aspects of their life. It is the science of harmonizing different energies and removing blockages for the free flow of universal energies at a dwelling and into one’s aura.

Energies and influences of the Chakras: Five Elements (Panchatatva); 9 Planets; 16 Directions; 45 Presiding Deities, 7 Colors (light from Sun), and more play a very vital role in any dwelling. This balance and free flow of energies help one reap maximum benefits such as good health, peace of mind, cordial relationships, auspiciousness, growth, prosperity, success, and happiness. Rectifying Vastu errors essentially also leads to the removal of blockages, thus solving issues and problems such as health, wealth, and progress.

The knowledge associated with Chakra Vastu has been then extensively researched and tested. Chakra Vastu is a science that is simple to understand and implement. It promotes the union of us with nature (Chakras of the Universe).

With Chakra Vastu, we map and understand macrocosm and microcosm of the Chakras of the dwelling (Chakras of Vastu Purush) and orient us to live our lives the way the universe wants us to live, this ensures balance and harmony of various energies leading to happiness, prosperity, harmony, growth and good health.

To gain maximum benefits and get optimal results from these energies, each corner and area is used for a particular activity. For instance, the Crown (Sahasrara) Chakra of the Vastu Purush is in the Northeast direction, and it is the most suitable direction for mediation purposes and to build a puja room. Similarly, it’s best to have a kitchen in the direction where the fire element or Solar Plexus (Manipura) Chakra is located in the dwelling.

Everything is this universe is made up of the Panchabhuta or the five elements. The five elements exist both as themselves and as all other objects. The five elements, namely Sky (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal), and Earth (Prithvi) are the basis of all creations. They are the building blocks of nature and all matter. These five elements have varied characteristics, knowledge, balance and harmony of these elements lead to health and happiness.

The balance or imbalance among the Panchtatva makes one’s space harmonious for the in-dwellers or creates problematic life situations for them. This imbalance happens when a direction is not used for its intended purpose or if the direction is extended or cut. Thus an underground water tank in the South zone will cause anxiety, instability, and lack of orders. Similarly, the fire placed in North zone (Ether) will block new opportunities and cause impatience and disturbed sleep, as they are attributes of this zone.

  • In the Chakra Vastu Mandala, the Head of the Vastu Purush lies in the North-East direction, which is apt to make the entrance as all energies enter the body or home through this direction.
  • The Stomach of the Vastu Purush lies in the South-East direction, which is apt to make the kitchen as the zone is ruled by the Agni element.
  • The Feet of the Vastu Purush lies in the South-west direction, apt for energies of Support and Stability. Thus, this direction is suitable for the owner or breadwinner of the dwelling to reside.
  • The Heart of the Vastu Purush lies in the North West so this zone signifies movement and desire fulfillment.
  • The Throat of the Vastu Purush lies in the North direction, so this zone is the center of knowledge and communication.
  • The Lower abdomen of the Vastu Purush lies in the West directions, so this zone signifies creativity, joy, union and sexuality.
  • The Lower pelvic region of the Vastu Purush lies in the South, so this zone is associated with work, strength and health.
  • The Lower Heart region of the Vastu Purush lies in the East direction and this zone is associated with divinity and auspiciousness.

Vastu Shastra is an edifice science that was developed by our learned ancestors thousands of years ago. Its application today is purely architectural and its principles are based on becoming one with nature. It is all about importance of each of this element and how well we can harmonize the Five Basic Elements "Panch Maha Bhoota" with directions and/or seven chakras to relieve a stressful life, bringing peace, protection and prosperity in our lives.

(Always Remember that Circular and Triangular Vastu Purush Mandalas, Given in Our Ancient Texts, are for Circular and Triangular Structures / Planning only. Join our Advance Vastu Practitioner Course.)

Many Vastu rules are derived from 'Vastu Purusha Mandala' which is depicted as a man lying with his head pointing towards north east and his feet pointing towards south west, in a grid of squares. The different directions and sectors are assigned to different designated functions; five elements (Panch Maha Bhoota); Seven Colours (VIBGYOR) and Seven Chakras.

Seven Colours-------------------------------------------Seven Chakras of Yoga (in human body)

Violet------------------------------------------------------------------------ ‘Sahastrara’: The Crown Chakra

Indigo--------------------------------------------------------------------------------‘Agnya’: The Brow Chakra

Blue---------------------------------------------------------------------------‘Vishuddha’: The Throat Chakra

Green ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ‘Anahata’: The Heart Chakra

Yellow ---------------------------------------------------------------------‘Naabhi’: The Solar Plexus Chakra

Orange ---------------------------------------------‘Swadhisthana’: The Sacral Chakra /Pelvic Chakra

Red ------------------------------------------------------------------------------‘Muladhara’: The Root Chakra

To maintain normal flow of energy, these chakra centres should remain balanced and functional.

Why should we consider Seven Major Chakra Centres in Vastu?

Vastu Shastra is based on the rules of Vastu Purusha Mandala. It is an indispensable part of Vastu Shastra and constitutes the mathematical and diagrammatic basis for generating design.

Here ‘Purusha’ refers to energy, power, soul or cosmic man. ‘Mandala’ is the generic name for any plan/chart, which represents the cosmos metaphysically/ symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe.

As per the theory of Yoga, the seven chakras are the energy centres in our body in which energy flows through. Blocked energy in our seven Chakras can often lead to illness. As Vastu Purusha or "Cosmic Man" is representation of a building/structure as organic life form or energy form which is made of five basic elements or Panch Maha Bhootas, it's important to understand what each Chakra represents; their location in the Mandala and what we can do to keep this energy flowing freely for a healthy living and harmonised union of mind, body and cosmos.

Roles of Energies in Vastu Shastra

(‘Pranic’, ‘Jaivic’ & Solar Energy)

Cosmic Energy (‘Pranic’ Energy)

As we know our Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees towards the North-East direction and it is moving from West to East direction. For an example, when we run we feel the air is coming against our direction. We feel the air. Similar thing happens to the movement of Earth towards the North-East direction vis-à-vis the Cosmic Energy (‘Pranic’ Energy), which comes in from the North-East direction.

This is the reason that much focus is paid towards the North-East direction. If this zone is blocked then the breadwinner will face many difficulties in life. No obstruction should be along the North-East zone; like bathroom, toilet, storeroom, staircase, master bedroom or even kitchen should not be placed there. Only prayer room is allowed there.

This area must be kept clean and tidy and preferably lightweight or no weight at all. Keep windows open here in the morning for the beneficial morning Sun. Use this place for meditation and prayers. Face North or East always when praying. In addition, keep a bowl of water (clean water) and place it at the corner of the North-East zone.

North-East zone represents the water element in Vastu. Respect this zone as if it’s the heart of the house. This room can be used if you are not well and wish to get well fast and to recharge yourself when your are stressed out.

Why there are some cases of houses being burgled or robbed by thieves while some are not; certain people get robbed; some dogs attack people easily and some dogs don't and keep their distance? This may be connected to the energy level of people and their homes. When a person’s energy level or ‘Prana’ energy level is low, dogs can sense it and they may attack. If a house energy level is low, thieves might sense it and notice it. How can they sense it? It comes down to their intuition and instinct and their feeling towards it. That is why that in some houses we sense good vibes and in some, we don't.

How do we know if a person’s energy level is high or low?

When you observe them talking negatively about people and themselves, gossiping and always complaining matters. They are never happy about themselves and the environment. Such persons are generally having very low energy level; so they will continue to attract negative things in their lives.

How do we measure a house energy level is high or low?

Firstly, observe the North-East direction of the house. If there is an obstruction, then the house has low ‘Prana’ energy. Next, observe the South-West zone. If there are no obstructions for the openings, then the ‘Prana’ energy has exited from this zone. South-West zone should always be closed, heavy and with fewer openings, then the energy can be stored.

As a conclusion, leave North-East zone free and open and keep South-West zone closed and heavy and observe the results.

Magnetic Field (‘Jaivic’ Energy)

Magnetic field of Earth flows from North to South. We as humans can only observe this energy when we sleep. If we get bad dreams, cannot sleep at night, or sleeping in excess then we may be or are sleeping with our heads towards North. Our body is receptive to the North-South Magnetic flow is due to IRON in our blood. Our head reacts as the North Pole and legs as South Pole.

When we sleep with our heads towards North, our head and the North Pole repels each other, and we get disturbed sleep. Sometimes we may even get migraine and headaches sleeping towards this direction.

The best direction to sleep is towards South. When North and South Pole is against each other, it attracts and we get sound and blissful sleep. We do not really have to sleep directly towards South; it can be South-East or South-West too but never towards North-East or North-West.

Solar Energy

The source of solar energy is only from the Sun. It is the source of Vitamin D as well. The morning Sun is very beneficial to our human bodies. It is best to get morning exposures during sunrise timings. As per the Hindu religion, praying the morning Sun God and chanting sacred ‘Gayatri Mantra’ facing East, would be quite beneficial. Expose yourself towards the morning Sun as much as possible. Take a bath in the morning exposing to the beneficial morning Sun with better absorption of Vitamin D.

The best location for kitchen is in the South-East zone which is the fire zone. Cook facing East. The best time to cook is from 9am to 12pm. The Sun will be at the South-East zone to benefit the Positive Ultra-Violet Rays from the Sun. After 12pm until Sunset, the immense heat of the Sun, which is not beneficial to us at all should be avoided. After 12pm, the position of the Sun will be at South then South-West then sets at West. This is the reason why our walls at home should be thicker along the Southern and Western zone. This is to prevent the harmful UV rays of the Sun into our living premises.

The Sun is the most vital source of energy and light. It is difficult to imagine life on Earth without it. The Sun’s rays can be split into seven plus two colors. From the very beneficial ultra-violet rays in its eastern side corresponding to north-east and infra-red in the opposite south-west side, the Sun’s rays split into violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red (VIBGYOR). The color pink, which comes from the intense ended colors’ interference, manifests in the East direction.

Below are the details of chakras, colors, and directions as per the Sunrays falling in the dwelling:

The 24 hours of 1 solar day are divided into eight parts associated with the eight cardinal directions. In each of these eight periods, the Sun is positioned in one of the cardinal directions. Therefore, the room most likely to be used during that period is located in this direction.

‘Pooja’ Room or meditation room in the Northeast

The time period from 3am to 6am, which is just before sunrise is called ‘Brahma Muhurta’. At this time, the Sun is in the Northeastern part of the house. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, or study as it is tranquil and peaceful. Therefore, the Northeast corner is the best position for the ‘Pooja’ room or prayer/ meditation room.

Bathroom, doors/windows in the East

From 6am to 7.30am, the Sun is in the eastern part of the house. This is when bathing and preparing for the day, so east is a good location for a bathroom used for bathing purposes only. Besides, there should be many openings and no obstructions in the East so that the morning sun’s beneficial rays will engulf the house.

Kitchen in the Southeast

The time between 7.30 am and 9am, when the Sun is in the Southeast part of the house, is the best time for preparing food to be eaten later in the day. The Sun emits more ultra-violet rays in the morning hours than any other time of the day, which positively affects the human body and the environment surrounding him. These rays have a tendency to kill bacteria.

Room, Office, Storeroom in the South

The period between 9:00 am and noon is the time for work. The Sun is now in the South, and hence this is the best position for an office and a room where one needs to work. It is also ideal for storerooms that need to be moisture-proof.

Master bedroom in the Southwest

After lunch, it is time for rest, so the time between noon and 3 pm is called Vishranti, the resting period. The Sun is now in the Southwest section of the house, and so it is the ideal location for a Master bedroom.

Children’s bedroom, study room, toilets in the West

The period between 3pm and 6pm is the time for children to study. The Sun is in the West, and this is the best location for a children’s bedroom or your study room.

Guest bedroom, living room, dining room in the Northwest

Generally, the time between 6pm and 9pm, when the Sun is in the Northwest part of the house, is the time for recreation and dining. So rooms where maximum movement is required are constructed here.

Money safe, Children room in the North

The time between midnight and 3 am, when the Sun is in the Northern section, is the time of darkness and secrecy. The North is, therefore, the best place to hide valuables and to keep them protected. It is also a good room for children to sleep.

Vastu Consultation

Vastu consultation is a detailed and in-depth study of the home or office. We would require your floor plan or 2D drawing drawn to scale to commence the process of consultation. Below are the steps involved in the consultation process:

Step 1: Using your floor plan/layout, first we work out the Brahmasthan of the dwelling. This is done through usage of the Vastu rules.
Step 2: Next the master plan is drawn pinpointing location of all sectors and positions in the dwelling. This is again done through the usage of the Vastu rules.
Step 3: Position of the Vastu Purush is established on map as per the dwelling.
Step 4: Floor plan with various directions, deities that reside in various directions and energy of the elements is worked out.
Step 5: Most ideal position for various sectors and positions in the dwelling is established and the said is compared with the current set-up.
Step 6: We calculate the overactive or underactive state of various energies in various directions.
Step 7: Defects and Doshas in the dwelling if any are worked out and understood in-depth.
Step 8: Issues faced and benefits required are taken in to consideration when preparing the recommendations.
Step 9: Recommendations are made of the ideal possible changes that can be done and products, which can be used to reduce the malefic effect of wrong construction and to gain maximum benefits from various directions.
