The square of Yama governs morals and discipline. Yama is god of ultimate justice, controller of the human karmas, ruler of the dead and spirits of the departed. The word yama means to arrest or to restrain. Yama's name can also be interpreted to mean 'twin. He is paired with Yami, his twin sister, wife and his feminine energy (Shakti).
Yami later became the river goddess Yamuna. According to the Vishnu Purana, his parents are the sun-god Vivasvan and Sanjna, the daughter of Tvashtra. He is also called Dharmaraja or the king of Dharma, the principles of duty and law upon which the world is supported. This law is what gives balance to the society. Yama is lokapala of the south direction. His earthly counterparts in the great epic Mahabharata were Yudhishthira and Vidura.

Yama (the Binder) is the god of death, the sovereign of the infernal regions. The wrathful one, who judges the dead, whom his messengers drag before his throne. He is the embodiment of righteousness (Dharma) and the king-of-justice (dharma-rāja). He is, however, compassionate. In the Vedas, Yama is the First Ancestor and the king-of-Ancestors (pitṛ-rāja). He rules over the kingdom of the dead where the Ancestors dwell till they move to Pitrilok. He is also the king-of-ghosts (preta-rāja).
Yama is the great master of knowledge. In the Kaṭhopaniṣad, Yama is portrayed as a teacher to Nachiketa; the legendary little boy. Their conversation evolves to a discussion of the nature of humans, knowledge, Atman (soul, self), Brahman, immortality and moksha (liberation). In other texts, Yama is also called Kaal (time).
The Yam pada represents Dharma at it's best. He is the besower of the Fruits of the Karmas. Chitragupta, the Akashik Record keeper, joins him here. Zone for ruling your house, your office or your businees with a just and truthful approach. A good place for record keeping.
