Q. My temple is located in a covered verandah. The back of the temple is towards the southwest, adjoining the wall of our neighbour’s home. The temple faces the northeast and it’s in front of the main door. Is this correct?

A. No, it doesn’t seem to be in the correct position. You should shift the puja place in the northeastern, eastern or northern area of your house. While praying, you should face northeast, east or north. 

Q. I am a teacher of math and science subjects. While a lesson is being taught, which directions should the teacher and students face?

A. You should face west and the students should face east. This is the ideal position.

A. A safe can be kept in the north side of the house on the southern or western wall. If you have a choice, it could open to the north or east. 

Q. I am constructing a house which is facing the west side. Can you suggest where my main gate and bedroom should be located.

A. A west- facing house should have main gate in West or Western Northwest corner and the master bedroom in the southwest. 

Q. We are looking at a property, an already- built home, with the main entrance opening towards the southwest. Is it ok?

A. It is not good. Try a house with northeast, north or east entrance. 

Q. I have a plot facing the southeast. I would like to know where to place the underground water tank. Should it be in the front or the back yard?

A. A water tank should always be in the northeast, north or east. It should not be on the line joining diagonals. 

Q. What is the best direction for a house to face?

A. Each direction has an exalted position where the front entrance can be placed and thus the house can face any direction. 

Q. What are the things that are to be kept in mind while selecting a plot?

A. The major factors that should be kept in mind while selecting a plot are geographical surroundings, level of the land, and roads around the plot. 

Q. Which shape is the ideal shape for a plot?

A. A plot is square if all four sides are straight and equal in length and it has equal angle of 90 degrees at all four corners. Square is the best shape of a plot. A plot is rectangular if it has four straight sides and equal angles of 90 degrees at all corners with opposite sides of equal length. A rectangular plot having it's length not more that double the breadth ( length and breadth not more that 1: 2) is a very good plot. 

Q. How one can determine the direction of a plot?

A. The direction of a plot can be determined by any of the two modern simple methods by using a compass, the device for finding direction which has a freely moving needle pointing to the magnetic north. Make two lines crossing each other dividing a paper in four equal parts at 90 degrees angle. Place a compass on paper in the middle of your plot and align it with two lines in the north and the south of the needle of the compass. Extend these lines on the plot and mark it to have exact direction. 

Q. In which direction should one’s feet or head be while sleeping?

A. A person should face proper direction while sleeping. This has great importance in Vaastu shastra . One should never sleep with one’s head towards the north pole and feet towards the south pole. However, one may sleep with one’s feet towards the west and head towards the east for mental peace, good thoughts and spirituality. 

Q. Does the location of a study room have any effect on vaastu shastra ?

A. One should face the north or the east or the northeast while studying and be amazed at how successful one is in academics. Therefore, the best locations for the study room are the north, east, or northeast. These directions attract the positive effects of Mercury, increasing brain power. Jupiter leads to increased wisdom, sun is meant for higher ambitions and Venus helps in bringing about creativity in new thoughts and ideas. Books may be kept in the southwest side of the room. A study room could have a door on the east or the north, or the Northeast. 

Q. I am a doctor practicing in Noida. Although I used to have a steady stream of patients for consultations, of late there has been a slight slowdown. My chair is facing the northwest and my back is towards the southeast. Is this the correct position?

A. Facing northwest is not wrong, but for you and your practice the best thing to do is to make sure you are sitting with your face to the northeast, if possible. Wait for the results.
