  Vaastu for Water Sumps
Vastu Shastra recommends some principles for construction of water sump in the building. According to Vastu, water elements should be available in the Northeast of the building. The following are some principles to build overhead and under ground water tanks.

The best place for digging the sump is the North-east of the plot. This leads to increase in wealth, prosperity and knowledge. While digging the sump, an axis should be drawn from the Northeast corner to southwest corner. The sump should be dug to the right or left side of axis. The sump in east of northeast is most beneficial and the sump in north of northeast is also good.

Water sump should not be towards Southeast or Northwest. The sump in the Southwest is worst. Avoid water sump at the center of the house.

If a well or water sump is to be create in the house, Vastu Puja must be performed on the commencement of the excavation and Ganga Puja on water. If the well is found to be polluted by dead creatures, the polluted water (as much as possible) should be removed and puja should be performed to cleanse it according to local traditions.

A sump/well should never be dug if a women in the family is pregnant. If while commencement of a new construction, a well is found in the plot, but is in the wrong direction, it should be closed/filled and a new well be dug in the direction as suggested according to Vastu. It is advisable to excavate the well in the north sector before commencement of construction.

If a Sump, Bore well and well is to be created in the house, the best is to plan it in north-east corner, east (positive) and north (positive). As the sump and well stores lot of water, it cools the earth. When the water is stored below the ground level has the character to reduce the weight of the place and brings in with it the natural energy of the Mother Nature.

The Sump, Bore well and well should not be in front of the main door of the house. It should not touch the compound wall or the main walls of the house. It should not obstruct the Gate in the compound. Clear space should be provided from the septic tank so as to ensure there is no seepage from it. A Sump, Bore well and well should never be dug if any of the women in the family are pregnant.

If while commencement of a new construction, a well is found in the plot, but is in the wrong direction, it should be closed and filled with good quality clean sand and a new well be dug in the direction as suggested according to Vastu. It is advisable to excavate the well or sump as the first work whiles the commencement of construction.

The Sump and well must be cleaned every three months. A Portion of the Cover should be kept open with filters, so that enough ventilation remains inside the well or sump. Otherwise a pipe of at least 8 inches diameter must be fitted at a place with a height equivalent to the height of the ground floor for ventilation. If the well is closed without providing ventilation, it brings in disasters to the family members.

The well water must be used at least for the gardening purpose every day, as abandoning the well water may cause serious setbacks to the peace of the family members. If the well is found to be polluted by dead creatures, the polluted water (as much as possible) should be removed and Pooja should be performed to cleanse it according to local traditions.
